So yesterday I was waiting to get my wife's new used car smogged per
California's regulation, talking to Karl, the most popular smog guy in the
county. I'd just been to the library and had a book in my hand - The
Letters of Josiah Royce - and he noticed and we started talking about
community and collectivism and the conversation took a very interesting
turn.
It seems Karl was up last night putting the finishing touches on a template
for an idea he has of hosting an anonymous website for smog check stations.
He has all these horror stories of the tricks the state pulls on smog check
stations with fake documentation and "bait cars" and such and how the state
just keeps getting trickier and trickier. This probably bothers Karl more
than most because he is the most popular smog check station in the county
for a reason, after all, and what he was proposing was using the power of
collectivization to counteract the power of the state. Fighting the
Attorney General of California as an individual isn't a very fair fight.
This is collectivism at its best. Grass roots and anti-bureacratic.
