It's a while now since i opened ZAMM or Lila but i think i would have put
the books down if i thought he was saying we were being drawn towards some
actualised or definite future; he always left 'Quality' undefined and i
think it is only through association and our tendency to anthropomorphise
that such teleological ideas arise - thats probably the origin of the God
idea also.

I know that the first couple of times I read Lila, I glossed over Chapter 11
finding the core of truth it reveal outweighed whatever reservations it may
have caused. But if you read it by itself and take what it says seriously
you will find that Pirsig does not understand the mainstream of evolutionary
theory. He is making arguments from the 1950's and clearly has not read
Gould, Dawkins or Wilson all of whom were widely available well before Lila
was written. Even more recently in the Baggini interview Pirsig makes it
clear that he does not understand how closely the MoQ is directly tied to
evolutionary thinking. I fear that Pirsig's misconceptions with regard to
this crucial point have contributed to the MoQ remaining a kind of cult.

Once again Bob, if your reading this, my spam filter has trapped your recent
correspondence. I would love to hear your take on this. Please try
"Teleology Rulz" in the subject line.
