sorry if you think it was out of line, I felt My source
mattered little in the conversation Marsha repeatedly
stated she has no time for any sort of authoritative
quotes, they are meaningless to her, so I took her
request as a rhetorical device to shut me up.
Matt:
Well, again, fair enough, but I still doubt that line is the
best taken. Not rising to the bait would be to ask Marsha
why quotations from other people offend her, and then
just not be offended when she takes offense.
It's like that scene in The Contender, when Joan Allen
says she's done nothing wrong and she has nothing to
feel ashamed about, and Jeff Bridges tells her that she
damn well better not _look_ ashamed then.
Going down that road, of course, might cause some
soul-searching on all our parts on the question of
"philosophology," of why, as Bo put it somewhat the
other day, we ignore all intellectual scholars except
those that already agree with us (like all our different
versions of Pirsig). Such a question is too easily
postponed by all of us, and the throw-away laughter of
Marsha is only matched ten times by the risible
scaffolding looking down on her. That's why it's
laughable in Bo, but not Marsha--Marsha is _actually_
facing down History, whereas Bo doesn't even seem to
realize that the weight of tradition is demonstrably on
his side, and that his casting of himself in the role of
"radical outsider" is funny from the arch-conservative.
I may not think Marsha laughs and scoffs in all the right
places, but (I'd like to think) I know why she does it.
