Marsha:
I am afraid of heights, and it is not a fear of falling as much as a fear of
the thoughts of jumping. While I think this is quite common, it does
represent a contradiction that is difficult to resolve: a desire to live and
die at the same time. I have a section of flat roof that I must
occasionally clear of snow, leaves and branches, and from where I annually
wash windows that overlook the lake, so I am confronted with this little
dilemma a few times a year. Maybe I don't jump because it doesn't seem high
enough to kill me, and I most certainly do not want to experience pain. I
could go on for many pages on this topic because I'm an introvert, but Mr.
Me-me would call me out.
I have no idea what you are getting at by connecting 'society's' reaction to
the gun, the ZMM reference and the 50's McCarthy era, but I am quite sure
the context is private within RMP, as it is with all individuals. And it
also seems to me that the context was private experience then, and private
pattern (as story) now, and very little has been told.
There was no offense taken, but I don't think we know enough of RMP to
speculate. Maybe it would be better to set up a hypothetical, or use your
own experience if you care to expose it to public. I mean what do we
actually know of the gun incident? Very little. I mean I would like to
hear RMP's story, but can see know reason to event one.
I don't know what else I can add, maybe other will take up your cause.
Marsha

Marsha to Andre:
To speculate and publicly discuss imaginings concerning RMP's
biography is not something I am comfortable doing.
Andre:
I do not wish to make you feel uncomfortable, or cause embarrassment
concerning Mr. Pirsig. However, he did openly discuss this issue in a
newspaper article. And he rarely gives interviews.
The point I was getting at was to make understandable 'society's'
reaction to a person wielding a gun understanding that he was not
making that particular point in ZMM context (during the '50's McCarthy
era).
Also, I was hoping that someone on this discuss could shed light on
the reasons why Mr. Pirsig included the attraction to jump from the
cliff in ZMM and (from Lila) the rather morbid thought about how long
it would take to fall from the hotel balcony, he is standing on, to
hitting the
ground.
I am trying to give them a place within their contexts.
Again, no offence intended Marsha.
Do you have any ideas?
Regards,
Andre
