I'd disagree that Pirsig would argue for an intellectually guided society.
Wasn't that the defining characteristic of Communism? Intellectual
control of society is not the solution and probably the problem. Hence
this thread.

Disagree with your objection. He is in favour of such, provided intellect is
guided by Dynamic Quality. Both ZMM and Lila were written to make that
clear.
He rejects socialism (as it is currently practised) because it does not
account for DQ.
Mind you, there is very little regard for DQ in most, if not all Western
societies as well, be it in politics, economics, education...you name it.
All is ruled from a SOM conviction/ perspective.
This will change...eventually.
