Platt to Marsha:
My problem with compassion is its tendency to enable self-destructive
behavior.
Andre:
Consider Pirsig's notion of compassion Platt:
Mr Pirsig:
'The MoQ seems to classify compassion as a pattern of social cohesion driven
by strong biological emotions. When these two are combined with intellectual
patterns of quality the result is a strong force for the good, as in the
abolition of slavery... .
'The narrative of ZMM is dominated by the compassion of the narrator for his
son eventhough he doesn't talk about it as such, and when Phaedrus says Lila
has quality he is speaking compassionately and is held in contemp for this
by Rigel [the lawyer epitomising social values in Lila]. Rigel is arguing
that Phaedrus' compassion for Lila is damned foolishness (recognise
something Platt!!!?). Phaedrus struggles in subsequent chapters to show that
it is intellectually sound'. (Anthony's Phd 'A Critical Analysis...'p163).
It seems to me that the self-destructive behaviour you talk about is really
about you having to re-evaluate large parts of your own static PoV's....and
you don't like it.
Regarding your holy admiration for the capitalist free-market system, here's
another one from the correspondence between Anthony and Pirsig published in
his PhD paper: ' The MoQ says that the values of the market place are a kind
of value but there is an intellectual level above them that is morally
superior' (p213).
The change from SOM to the MoQ is not simply an intellectual matter Platt.
When done correctly, and integrated in Quality, it affects and changes the
totality of the patterns that bear the name 'Platt' and which you define as
you.
Wake up man!
For what it is worth...but you'll wriggle your way out of it I am very
confident Platt.
Over and out to you.
Andre
