> Gentlemen: The quote you seek:

"Within this evolutionary relationship it is possible to see that
intellect has functions that predate science and philosophy.
The intellect's evolutionary purpose has never been to discover
an ultimate meaning of the universe. That Is a relatively recent
fad. Its historical purpose has been to help a society find food,
detect danger, and defeat enemies." (Lila, 24)

No doubt Pirsig has said this and that it is "gefundenes fressen"
(delicatessen) for the weak interpreters and general obfuscators alike:
Intellect emerged with ape colonies to help them "find food, detect
danger and defeat enemies". It's more than plain that Pirsig means
INTELLIGENCE. Intellect's true purpose is (among other things) to
discover the scientific truth about the universe.
