My theory is that while intellect's search for ultimate meaning is a recent
fad, the need for relative meaning has been with us from day one. That is,
humanity has always existed in a narrative context - some story that shapes
the tribe's thoughts about a history, and a future (afterlife) and relation
to other tribes. This is the uniquely human attribute which separates man
from animal.
The intelligence to discover food, defeat enemies and run from danger, I'd
argue is more social in nature than intellectual, and shared with wolf
packs, meerkats, horse herds and whale pods.
