A metaphysics is the study of the nature of reality.
[Arlo]
Right. It is an attempt to describe (intellectual patterns of value) the
"nature of reality". A "metaphysics" is a description of nature, it does not
precede definition and analysis, it IS definition and analysis.
[Marsha]
Once it has been determined that the nature of reality is Quality, then yes,
'The Metaphysics of Quality' denotes Reality equals Quality (DQ/sq).
[Arlo]
Right. This was the intellectual "denoting" that Pirsig authored. "The
Metaphysics of Quality" does not "denote" anything, such anthropomorphic
objectivising turns the Word into the God, like saying "The Bible says..." (the
Bible "says" nothing, the people who wrote the chapters did the "saying").
I don't usually mind such use of narrative genre, but in this case I think it
creates a huge stumbling block for the SOL crowd.
So to be clear, Robert Pirsig speculated that Reality equals Quality. His
metaphysics is an intellectual pattern that attempts to describe this in such a
way as to point towards the indefinable source rather than obscure it.
Again, it is a Metaphysics (defining and analysis) of Quality (the indefinable
nature of reality).
Pirsig's metaphysics is slicing and dicing of Quality, it does not precede such
analysis, it is the result of it.
