If i may, i would add all patterns are born, grow, become ripe (to use Jung's phrase), die and fade away.
Not all patterns are lucky enough to reach all these stages in order especially if there is a move away from homeostasis according to Jung. Then, the block that impedes progress must be adapted to which could be a sheared bolt or an empty gas tank.
