I didn't know about the term homeostasis, but it seems to be a fancy name for something pretty obvious. When life evolves, it must of course have a very wide base, it can't just grow upwards. So the result is a very stable pyramid, not a fragile skyskraper.

Re. Homeostasis. I don't think your building analogy quite hits it but it's a good stab.
You see, buildings don't maintain themselves if you think about it.
Animals and biospheres, some mechanisms, computers and psychic realms do.
Think of the flyball governor used in steam engines as an example of mechanical homeostasis.
