John:

I disagree.

Social patterns are those that define relationships between autonomous
beings, mainly concerned with the biological success.

Intellectual patterns are ideas, concepts, philosophies AND religions,
mainly concerned with social success.

This is where Bo trips you up big time. Thinking that the story of Odin is
"social" whereas the story of cogito ergo sum is intellectual. Both
explanations are intellectual glue holding their respective societies
together. Remember Pirsig's double-take over Chris's ghost story? When
Chris said his friend believed in ghost, the narrator disparaged the idea -
said he was just fooling. When Chris mentioned his friend had an Indian
name, Pirsig corrected himself and then went on to use the ghost metaphor to
illustrate that the laws of rationality and reason, and SOM were ghosts.
This ghost of reason, that Phaedrus had thrashed, (put in its place) was
just another pattern of intellectual glue, holding a society together. It's
still dominant today, confusing those who don't see any other way and wonder
what an "moq" dominated society would even look like.

Since they can't imagine, they can't believe.
