Pirsig is the last person to allow that to happen. The LEAST likely
to take up the mantle of authoritative pronouncements from the
mountaintop. His work makes this point over and over, and Mary's got it right.

Not at all, John. The passage you refer to is about authority to
define Quality. You are confusing this with Pirsig's metaphysics of
Quality. I think Pirsig is quite an authority on what his ideas are.
I've never claimed anyone, "least of all Pirsig" (whatever that means
in this context) has authority to define what Quality is. But, when
we are talking about HIS metaphysics, I think he is the ultimate
authority. As YOU would be the ultimate authority in talking about
YOUR metaphysics.
