Hey Bo,

Rather than there being a "stepping stone" to intellect it was DQ's 
attribute of "Its only perceived good is freedom and its only perceived 
evil is static quality itself." that caused intellect to leave the social level 
to go off on "purposes of its own."  In other words, the impetus for the 
"emergence" of new levels is DQ's quest to be free of static's grip.
