Interesting you bring that up. it got me thinking and I pulled out my
dictionaries and went to google translate ( which is pretty good) and you
were right. While I was at it I also punched in the word stewardship.
On fairness, in both French and Arabic I kept getting things like:
Equitable, Just, Honest and favorable.
Fairness does not mean that the game is going to end in a tie. It means
that no one will cheat.
The issue of language is something that has come up here before. People
are surprised when I tell them that I think in gender even when speaking
English. English was my third language and I learned it at the age of 15.
While both french and Arabic use gender, they only correlate about 80% of
the time. some things are a given, boy girls, father mother, then you
have things like school, female gender in both Arabic and french. Yet
'door' in my mind is male, even though 'La porte' is female in french. I
guess your brain revert to the first impression you put there.
Airplane and Automobile are female, loaf of bread and hammer are male.
Speaking of untranslatable words, when the teacher had to step out of the
classroom for a minute she would say to us "soyez sage", translated it
means 'be sages', what she meant was 'be good'.
Sage in french means someone who listens and obeys well.
The french don't have the word Leader, especially when referring to
something like 'an industry leader' or 'leader in innovation'.
languages with genders attached to them tend to influence the culture and
vice versa.
That is one of the problems we have when trying to understand other
cultures, their politics, way of life and why they do things the way they
do. That is why democracy (female) is such a strange concept in some
parts of the world.
