They shouldn't do and from the ones I've seen so far that's not been the 
case - let me know if you find out anything different.

Should be plenty out there as it's based around open source software. 
It's a Unix thing but there are windows utilities to uncompress gzipped 
archives. Try:

http://gnuwin32.sourceforge.net/packages/gzip.htm

or

http://www.gzip.org/


or google gzip

You might have to use the command line in a terminal (dosbox) for some 
of them.
