 The Forrest Rules

Think of it as a kind of

speech: mushroom shake
their heads when you stoop
to pick them. Berries drift
away on a sudden breeze. These
are not yet to be eaten. And the dead

disdainful tree is not yet
to be cut, no matter
how long it has stood easy
against the air, ready to

fall. And when it does, it will
still refuse you, until one day
it is ready, silent as fuel,
empty of speech that filled
your eyes. Of course

none of this happens
but it does not happen
exactly like this.
