Over the years there have many references among contributors here to the 
Enlightenment and its effect on modern life. In today's NY Times is a wonderful 
op-ed by David Brooks explaining that the Enlightenment actually had two 
separate and often competing influences -- the French Enlightenment and the 
British version with two different views of human nature resulting in different 
political views. If you'd like to know more about the fundamental values split 
between liberals and conservatives, this is a good place to start.
