[MD] Faust tradition

In the middle 80s I studied the Faust tradition in preparation for a reading 
of Dr. Faustus by Thomas Mann.  I read Marlow, Goethe and a half-dozen 
books on the Faust tradition.  At the time, I interpreted and identified with it 
as a lust for knowledge.  Still have many of the books packed away.  I doubt 
if I could answer any of your question; it seems like a long time ago.

I don't know the operas.  They might be wonderful to pursue.
