Marsha replied:
Have the purposes chosen by Western intellect provided goodness?
I'd say yes, but mostly no. I think RMP has asked the question,
Krishnamurti and the Dalai Lama certainly have, with all our
technological advancement are humans suffering less. Tough
to know, but again my guess would be mostly no they are not
suffering less.

While understanding that all is
Value, I, personally, do not like to make value judgements.
If I do, moments later I can think of twelve other reasons
why I might be wrong. But it is some peoples preference
to proclaim judgements. Maybe I'm suggesting I do not
think you question can be answered.
What do you think? Have I gone off in a different direction?
Ron:
No not at all.
No it can't in any definitve sense because the answer is unique
to every situation, every value judgement. The answer is reflection
of your own values. Ask yourself why you value something, explore
the reasons. I think you hit it.
I have taken the course to try to get engaged in value judgements.
They can't be avoided, I'm composed of them. I make them whether
I want to acknowledge it or not. With that in mind. I really try to
reflect on them. It can make certain judgements easier to make.
It helps with recognizing false conflicts too.
I think it has helped in developing a sort of intellectual morality for
myself which as you say, hesitates on making knee-jerk value judgements.
