Mark:
I am sorry I missed the whole Intellectual Level Brew-haha, it must
have been interesting. Someday I will visit the archives on that one.
Usually when there is tension in a dialectic it is interesting to see
how it plays out. Sounds a bit unfinished to me, or else the
combatants were unwilling to see what could be learned.
Ron:
That was a good Brew-haha, do check the archives cause it goes back
years.
The problem was'nt so much the ideas presented (even though they were
soundly defeated via logical consistancy) the problem was in the face
of this defeat the claim was that Pirsig did'nt understand his own concepts.
A sort of "hijacking" of Pirsigs work began to take place. When the players
were asked to stop they got pissy and left.
It is my opinion that this discuss evolved for the better and that Pirsigs work
is much better understood between the participants than it had been.
It was primarilarly an anti-intellectual movement .
It has been banned because it was determined that those who kept asserting
this concept could not explain their reasons for this belief. The entire case resting
on interpretive legitimacy alone. When logical consistancy was brought to bear
on the subject ,It was claimed that Pirsig did'nt understand his own work.
When inquired how this interpretaion was better philosophically than Pirsigs interpretaion
no answer could be given.
Horse was forced to step in as moderator to cease the flaming and put an end to the line
of discourse.
When the patterns of marsha write that they can not write what they think of the intellectual
level, they literally can not write what they think about it only their interpretation of select
quotes. Those quotes dont have to make sense in the context of a consistant whole, they merely
only have to support prejudical intuitions. Which really draws the distinction on how one justifies
their beliefs.
When one is anti-intellectual they use reason to justify belief. When one uses intellect they use
reason to find what beliefs are best.
