Hi dmb,
Perhaps I am being overly protective.  My comment was indeed a gut
reaction to what I thought was yet another denegration of ZAMM.  Like
I said I will pay attention to the discussion to see if I learn
anything.  I do believe that Pirsig was involved with Zen temples at
some point, and that he stated that where he arrived was the same
place that Zen practice arrives at.  I may be wrong on this.

My pesonal opinion is that ZAMM has everything to do with Zen, it is
just not presented in the same fashion as: "that great body of factual
information relating to orthodox Zen Buddhist practice."  I believe
this is what Pirsig meant, not that it wasn't Zen.  He did not want to
have to field questions from the great scholars of "orthodox Zen", and
I can't blame him.  It is his personal story and Zen is ultimately
personal.
