Hello Tim,

I never heard of John D. MacDonald before, so thank you for bringing him to
my attention. I've been reading a lot of books about Florida lately, The
Orchid Thief by Susan Orlean being one of the most recent. Cool Hand Luke
(the book, not the movie) by Donn Pearce also takes place close to where I
now live.
