[Platt]
When his philosophy becomes as widely known as Plato's, it will
become a social pattern. Another example: Darwinian theory began as
an intellectual but is now a social pattern -- intellectual when
first created, social now because accepted as common knowledge.
That's how I define the difference between intellectual and social patterns.

Except that Pirsig clearly states that intellectual patterns from
FROM social patterns, not vice versa. "This "mythos over logos"
thesis agreed with the Metaphysics of Quality's assertion that
intellectual static patterns of quality are built up out of social
static patterns of quality." Pirsig goes on to describe the logos as
"the root word of "logic," refers to the sum total of our rational
understanding of the world." Sum total of our rational understanding
of the word... in other words "common knowledge".
