Perhaps you can explain how I should think about chance.

To each his own. But talk about uncertainty! Anybody who has started a business
or invests in our capitalistic system knows about the risk of losing your
shirt. Old Sam happened to make it big by giving the people what they wanted --
low prices. God bless him. But for every Sam there are hundreds of losers. But,
you pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and try again. That's the American
way, and worth a prayer of gratitude now and then.
