[Mark]
OK, we can disagree here too. If anything, rape laws increase rape stigma.
[Arlo]
I disagree. "Rape stigma" is the force of shame, humiliation and violence
social dominated cultures inflict on both the aggressor and the victim. We can
see this very demonstrably, in both modern times and in history.
There is no (or should be no) stigma with being "raped" in an
intellectually-dominated society.
[Mark]
This is what I mean by Western thought. This is where you are.
[Arlo]
Not in the least, and I find the ongoing attempts at belittlement frustrating.
I suppose I should respond in kind.
[Mark]
You are proposing an intellectual argument to support the intellectual sense of
truth.
[Arlo]
Again, this makes no sense whatsoever. When did I even use the word "truth" in
this conversation? I am showing that according to a Metaphysics of Quality,
"sex" is a biological pattern, "rape stigma" is a social level pattern, and
"rape law" is an intellectual level pattern.
[Mark]
Dictating from the top down. This is similar to the brain thinking it is the
most important organ. If it dies, the rationale is that the person is dead.
[Arlo]
This is like arguing to me about the cost of a car by telling me its raining
outside. Of course the higher levels can't destroy the lower levels. Of course
intellect can't destroy society. Of course if society dies then intellect is
gone as well. Duh.
But this doesn't mean they don't preserve their patterns by controlling
behaviors beneath them.
[Mark]
OK, except freedom starts at the inorganic level. We have conceptualized it,
nothing more.
[Arlo]
Freedom is an empty word. I prefer "agency". Yes, agency begins at the
inorganic level. But agency increases as you move up the levels, not decreases.
Agency has far greater possibility at the intellectual level than the limited
repertoire of responses a quark has.
[Mark]
Cultures are dominated by the inorganic level. I don't know how else to put
this.
[Arlo]
Societies are structured by the biological patternness of its members, and
biological patterns are structured by the inorganic patternness of their base
composition. But again, you are arguing to me about the cost of a car by
telling me its raining outside.
But society must control biology, the reason for social customs and enforcing
these customs was to preserve the expanded freedoms the social level made
possible.
[Mark]
The rape laws are a social consequence of the biological level.
[Arlo]
No. Rape Laws are an intellectual response to "rape stigma" which is a social
response to "sex", which is a biological pattern.
[Mark]
Society does not control it. How would a more simple level control a more
complex one?
[Arlo]
Complexity increase from inorganic to intellectual, not the other way around.
[Mark]
Do the equations depicting the motion of the planets control the planets?
[Arlo]
The intellectual level never deals with the inorganic level directly, this is
mediated through the social and biological levels. In other words, "equations"
can't lift a rock (inorganic) from the ground, but your arm (biological) can.
And our modern highways are engineered via this exact principle. Abstract
theories and equations that are translated into instructions and guides and
workplans, which in turn mobilize machinery operations, get workers out of bed
in the morning, give coffee truck drivers income, etc., which in turn cause
certain motor activity among the humans involved, which in turn transforms the
inorganic level.
[Mark]
I am not sure if the word urge is meant to be pejorative or not. I certainly
hope not, it would make your life meaningless.
[Arlo]
And here you reveal where you are trapped. Why does sex as an "urge" remove
meaning from your life? Personally, I find meaning in my existence by what I
do, not by some "plan" or "hand" that put me here.
[Mark]
Gardening is simplifying the garden, not controlling it. You cannot tell the
plants how fast to grow. Laws simplify the social level in the same way. They
cannot control it.
[Arlo]
I don't know, everyday I travel on the highway I am glad that they do.
