Marsha:
'Subjects looking' is a patterned way of thinking. No such thing; only static
patterns of value moving through a field of DQ. The value is held together
by repetition through time and across individuals. At least that 's how I
understand. Lila is an accumulation of ever-changing patterns intersecting
with DQ.
Platt:
I don't think "patterns" add anything. In fact, they obscure the value
universe. Why not just say, "No such thing, only static values moving through a
field of DQ." And, "Lila is an accumulation of ever-changing static values
intersecting with DQ." Does inserting "patterns" add anything?
Marsha:
For me painting can be static or dynamic, depending. I liked that
Bacon said, "The paintings should be a re-creation of an event rather than a
reproduction of an object." That seems a dynamic approach.
Platt:
I like the dynamic approach which means having a vague idea in mind at the
beginning of a painting and then watching to see if the process of painting
(the event)" produces anything of value. Most often in my case, not.
Marsha:
Betterness? Again I wonder about Bacon's disturbing images 're-creating
suffering'.
I wonder about doing that. Is there betternerss in painting suffering? Maybe
it's best
not to think about it - just paint.
Platt:
Maybe the painter has to suffer to produce anything of value. As Pirsig said,
"Suffering is the negative face of the Quality that drives the whole process."
Certainly suffering the consequences of bad decisions is a great moral teacher.
Anyway, I like the idea of painting as an event--just respond to what appears
on the canvas as it evolves, like the process of living..

Marsha:
Is there an e-motive to represent 'I demure'.'
Platt:
The proper response for a public forum. .
