I think you have it backwards. "The instant of vision" is always in the>
present. "The instant of awareness" is optional.

The present is what we are presently aware of & that must, of course, be the
"instant of awareness". It is optional, but when it occurs, it is in the
present & everything leading up to it is in the past.

The present is filled primarily with things we might attend to but are
largely unaware of. To the extent that we are aware it must be in the
present. But mostly we aren't. Just as for example James says concepts and
memories do enter into and become integrated into our perceptions and
assessments of the moment.
